The olive tree against the bulldozer: is it a hopeless struggle? Palestinian farmers have no means of defending themselves other than their work. The Israelis not only fence off the “conquered” area, but also destroy the crops and cut down the trees. Despite this painful experience, the Palestinian farmer has started to plant more and more olive trees. His reasoning is simple. The occupying forces might hesitate to take over an orchard. Uprooting trees is extremely unpopular and can lead to demonstrations. Has this determined yet non-violent resistance slowed down the Israeli expropriations? Perhaps, but in vain.
