Περιγραφή:
Ensuring that urban populations were fed regularly and at a good price was one of the main concerns of the political authorities in the societies of the Ancien Régime. The Mediterranean saw early and continuous urbanisation, which would not have been possible without the establishment of annunciatory systems for organising agricultural production and controlling urban markets. (…) Cereals are subject to the vagaries of the weather and transport difficulties, but they are essential for feeding populations and, more than any other foodstuff, were subject to surveillance and regulation, particularly in Rome and Constantinople.
