From the 27th to the 30th of May, in the framework of the Town Twinning Project Between Türkiye and the EU, a work meeting was held, attended by representatives of the Municipality of Selva (Mallorca, Spain), Edremit (Turkey), and the Cultural Foundation “Routes of the Olive Tree “, partner in the twinning programme, which was represented by our partner Mr. Konstantinos Kaisaris.
During the 3-day meeting, the programme of which included a series of meetings with local and regional authorities, research institutions and olive oil industry actors, etc., a regional cooperation framework in the Mediterranean between olive growing regions in Turkey, Spain and Greece has been defined, on the basis of sustainable olive oil value chains and climate change adaptation. In addition, the Balikesir Regional Government, the Municipality of Edremit, the Chamber of Commerce, Balikesir University, oil agricultural training centers, producers and stakeholders expressed their interest to join the Network of the ” Routes of the Olive Tree “, Cultural Route of the Council of Europe.
The creation of a local cultural route ” Routes of the Olive Tree ” in Edremit is one of the objectives set and included in the joint programming in order to enhance gastronomic and cultural tourism in the region, its particular identity and the exchange of know-how in olive growing. Also discussed were the future synergies between the OTRoutes Foundation and the representatives of the “Aeneas Cultural Route” in which Edremit participates as well as joint actions for the next programming period.
