World Olive Day – An experiential introduction to olive oil for children

On the occasion of World Olive Day, the Kalamata Agricultural Cooperative and the Cultural Organization “Roads of the Olive Tree” welcomed young students from Grandma’s Garden, along with their teachers, to a special educational event.

The young friends had the opportunity to learn firsthand how the olive fruit, from the tree, reaches the oil mill and how—through a unique production process—it ends up in the bottle and then on our plate. They enthusiastically tasted fresh bread dipped in extra virgin olive oil, while for their mid-morning snack they enjoyed their favorite PDO Kalamata olives.

The cooperative’s master craftsman, Vangelis, and its director, Dimitris, lovingly and patiently explained to the children – in simple terms – why the people of Kalamata and their families are proud of PDO Kalamata olives. The children seemed to agree… by emptying their plates!

At the end of the visit, the organizers gave the young students elegant bags with a small package of Messinia’s “gold” and a badge from the Olive Tree Routes, one of the recognized cultural routes (UNESCO 2003).
