Cultural Organization “Routes of the Olive Tree”
Apidea, Municipality of Evrotas – 12 October 2025
The Cultural Organization “Routes of the Olive Tree” participated on Sunday, 12th October 2025, in the unveiling ceremony of the plaque marking the “Oldest Olive Tree” of the Peloponnese, held in the village of Apidea, Municipality of Evrotas, Laconia. The event, which drew a large audience, was co-organized by the Municipality of Evrotas, the Messinia Institute of Culture, and the Regional Unit of Laconia.
This historic olive tree has been included in the Network of Centenarian Trees of the Greek Revolution established by the Messinia Institute of Culture and has recently been declared a Protected Natural Monument. Its age is estimated to exceed 2,000 years, with a trunk circumference of 14.10 meters.
Known also as the “Olive Tree of the Revolution”, it belongs to the Myrtolia variety, traditionally cultivated in Laconia, and continues to this day to produce olive oil of exceptional quality, a symbol of endurance and continuity of the land.
In a deeply symbolic act, local students participated for the first time in the ceremonial ribbon-tying of the millennia-old olive tree, paying tribute to its historical, environmental, and educational significance.
The presence of the “Routes of the Olive Tree” organization at the event highlights its enduring commitment to the protection, promotion, and connection of ancient olive trees with history. It was an opportunity to exchange ideas and to share together a moment of celebration so important for the community, giving profound value to our cultural heritage.
