In a world where modern consumer habits generate an ever-growing amount of waste and climate change has become a pressing concern, the Cultural Organization Routes of the Olive Tree collaborates with artists who embrace environmentally conscious methods of creation, highlighting the urgent need to address these issues.
Within this context, and through its participation in the European project OTRart – Overview Through Rubbish & Art: Revealing Waste Through Art, the organization is currently hosting in Kalamata a “creative artistic residency” focusing on the reckless use of plastics, aiming to raise environmental awareness among the public through art.
Two young artists, KABRIT (Lebanon) and SKITSOFRENIS (Greece), are joining forces to create artworks from discarded plastic objects, encouraging reflection and awareness through an artistic intervention. This will take place in the center of Kalamata (Central Market) on Saturday, September 27th (18:00–21:00), accompanied by live music from Surf in Black, the student band of the Music School of Kalamata.
The activity is included in the official program of the Municipality of Kalamata for World Tourism Day 2025, organized this year under the theme “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.”
The OTRart project is co-funded by the European programme Creative Europe and coordinated by the Cultural Organization Routes of the Olive Tree. The artistic intervention in Kalamata will later be showcased in an international exhibition in Avignon (France) and disseminated worldwide through a digital campaign.
As part of OTRart, similar actions will be carried out by Routes of the Olive Tree in five other European countries: France, Italy, Croatia, Spain, and Malta.
