Τhe King of Spain awards the Charles V European Prize to the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme
In 2019, on the occasion of Europe Day, the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation delivered a prestigious accolade, the “Carlos V European Award,” to the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme. This was a historic moment, as it marked the first time this distinguished award was granted to a European program.
His Majesty the King of Spain graced the ceremony at the Royal Monastery of Yuste to present the award to the Council of Europe’s Secretary General, Thorbjørn Jagland. The significance of this honor lies in its recognition of individuals, organizations, projects, or initiatives that significantly contribute to the enhancement of Europe’s cultural and historical values.
Since 1987, the Cultural Routes programme demonstrates, by means of a journey through space and time, how Council of Europe member States share a common cultural heritage and this award is a testament to the enduring significance of preserving our collective history.
Following this remarkable recognition in 2019, the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation recently awarded an economic endowment, entrusted to the European Institute of Cultural Routes. This endowment has a specific purpose – to be used as Travel Grants, benefiting the 47 Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe.
