A thousand-year-old olive tree in the municipality of Fornalutx in Majorca, of the local variety “Empeltre Mallorquina”, has been selected by the AEMO (Association of Olive Oil Producing Cities of Spain) as the best monumental olive tree in Spain for 2020
According to AEMO, the olive tree “Can Det” with a perimeter of the trunk of 6.5 meters is probably planted by Muslims in the 9th century and it was “witness” to the recovery of the island by Christian troops in the 13th century.
The Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, where it is located, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the category of cultural landscapes, and more precisely Vale de Sóller, area of Can Det, where there are impressive dry stone terraces.
This magnificent natural and cultural landscape is displayed internationally by the very active UNESCO Center of Majorca, honorary member of our network “OTRoutes, Olive Tree Routes”. AEMO is also a member of the OTRoutes network, with the cooperation of which many programs have been developed for the promotion of olive growing and oil tourism in the Mediterranean.
